Why insulate ?
|
|
The purpose of the thermal insulation of pipework and ductwork is to:
- Reduce energy use.
- Reduce surface temperatures to a safe level.
- Reduce random heat gains and losses in order to make
buildings more pleasant in summer and easier to control in
winter.
- Prevent small diameter steam pipes from becoming choked
with internal condensation.
- Prevent condensation - both inside and outside pipes and
ducts.
- Provide frost protection.
It is important to maintain the continuity of
insulation at all points, by closely butting joints in the
insulation to prevent direct heat paths.
Flanges and valves can be sources of significant
heat loss and should be insulated to the same standard as
adjacent pipework.
