Voids and gaps within buildings often need to be subdivided
or closed to control the movement of smoke and flame in the
event of fire.
Detailed requirements are complex and must be defined by
designers in individual cases. however, four general
principles of containment may be identified:
- Interconnection of cavities, or of cavities and rooms
must be prevented.
- Smoke and flame must be prevented from by-passing
fire-resisiting materials.
- Individual cavities or voids should not exceed certain
dimensions.
- Imperfections of fit between building elements intended
to resist fire must be fire-stopped.
These requirements are met by various materials,
defined in the buildings regulations as cavity barriers
and fire stops.
